Polling #OWS

Occupy Wall Street Survey Results 102611

Pretty much what you’d expect but interesting. I suspect this poll was taken on a union march day, because the rate of people in unions or with family members in a union (I guess the latter category skews it, too) is about 600% of the American public at large (not that I’m complaining about union representation but just noting that it’s a fist in the face of the idea that these are rich people who work on Macs all day and don’t hold ‘real jobs’.) The ‘who’s the least crappy Republican’ question is funny, too; Ron Paul predictably wins that by a long stretch (kudos for RP people for getting out there; at the same time, I think picking a corrupt, boring Washington insider moderate like Romney who at least supports public healthcare is very obviously better than reelecting Rutherford Hayes, and not to be an elitist, but it seems like people who lean left but ‘kinda like this Ron Paul guy’ are usually people who are rather uninformed — he’s a reactionary, ya’ll, no two ways about it — who cares if he supports ending the war on drugs, he still doesn’t give a shit if you can’t afford Grandma’s cancer drugs!) Again, while I think that the ‘message is in the medium’ ethos of #OWS is cool and that it is attempting to go beyond co-optation in an important and discourse-shifting way…some of the people there are a little inchoate (the ‘identify with a party’ question is disappointing; even if you don’t like a party’s actions and think it’s corrupt, you can still think abstractly about their economic and social policy) and some of this ‘we have no ideology’ stuff just sounds like Nativism/Know-Nothing-ism all over again to me. Anti-kudos to the pollsters for using an outmoded single-axis political ideology scale; not that most pollsters don’t do it, but it’s particularly inappropriate in this context. Sample size also appears to be a little small (301) but since OWS in NYC is not super huge i/t/o actual occupiers, I guess that’s not too big a stretch.
